The short answer

This is the first monthly entry in a series documenting the building of Raka Capital, my investment vehicle. I will share what I am doing, what I am learning, and where allowed, the numbers. No hype.

Why I am writing this

When I started building Raka Capital, I could not find honest, public accounts of what it takes to build an investment vehicle from Nigeria. Most content is either aspirational or sponsored. I want to change that.

This series is for founders who are thinking about the transition from operator to investor, and for anyone curious about the mechanics of building a capital vehicle in West Africa.

What Raka Capital is

Raka Capital is my investment vehicle. It is not a fund in the traditional sense. It is a vehicle for making disciplined investments in companies and opportunities I understand deeply, primarily in the Nigeria-Africa-Gulf corridor.

My edge is operational. I have spent over a decade building software and AI systems, and building Next12 Nigeria as a venture studio across 35+ countries. I served as advisor to VC funds including Aura VC. I am not a former banker. I am an operator who writes checks.

Month one: what I did

  1. Defined the thesis. Raka Capital invests in companies where I can add operational value, not just capital. That means technology companies in Nigeria and the Gulf corridor where I have network and operational experience.
  2. Set up the structure. I am working with counsel on the legal structure. I will share more once it is finalized.
  3. Started deal flow. I am seeing deals through my network at Next12 and through VC advisory channels including Aura VC, plus direct inbound from founders who read this site.
  4. Built the pipeline. I am tracking opportunities in fintech, logistics, and AI infrastructure.

What I learned

The biggest surprise is how much of the job is saying no. I see interesting deals every week. Most of them are not right for Raka Capital at this stage. The discipline is in the filtering.

Next month

I will share the legal structure once finalized, the first investment if it closes, and more detail on the pipeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Raka Capital a traditional fund?

No. Raka Capital is structured as an investment vehicle for disciplined, operator-led allocations rather than a traditional LP-funded fund. The priority is companies where I can add operational value on top of the capital.

What sectors does Raka Capital focus on in month one?

The pipeline in month one tracked primarily fintech, logistics, and AI infrastructure. Expect the sector focus to sharpen over the first few quarters rather than lock in before thesis evidence.

Where does Raka Capital deal flow come from at such an early stage?

Initial deal flow comes primarily from the Next12 Nigeria venture studio network, from VC advisory channels including Aura VC, and from direct founder inbound after reading this site.

Disclosure: Emmanuel Isaac is building Raka Capital. This series documents that process. No paid placement is accepted.
